Lots of cake! is a discourse on family structure and how celebration can be used as a mode of escapism.
As in Tzvetan Todorov’s narrative theory, the inevitable cycle of the mundane is interrupted by snippets of beauty, lifting your gaze from the endeavour to the finale and the inherent splendour within. When the candles are blown out the costumes and props are then boxed away in anticipation for the next event and the cycle continues.
This project began as a chronicle of special occasions, emphasising the role that my mother plays in creating important moments, and evolved from a document into a revelation of her character and imagination.
