During E Book Show in partnership with Kristianne Darake and Guy Moreton from Southampton Solent University, we ran a student choice award.

Books in the show made by students entered a pool from which 5 favourites where chosen – one by Kristianne, one by Guy, and a top 3 by public vote. Here’s what they had to say…

Daniel Helene, Inside Out
chosen by Kristaianne Drake

Words – Kristianne Drake

Daniel Helene’s Inside Out is a small but perfectly formed hand made photobook.

The size of the book immediately evokes an intimacy between the object and the viewer (and this is before we get to the text at the end which makes a small explanation).

As we open the book we are addressed by the word Avesso, which translates as reverse or backwards, from this we understand that we are being brought into a memory retold through image.

The physicality of the object forces us to get very close to engage with it, and this simple act elicits a sense that we are privy to a very personal story unfolding before our eyes.

If I were to make one small objection it would be that the text at the end, whilst explanatory, is unnecessary, but then this is a student book and students are all about the learning process.

I would also like to make a mention of the book The Analogue World of J.Birkett and Others by Natasha Withøft. This book reminds us that the world is moving forward so fast, we often overlook the nuances of the past that held us together for so long.

The crumbling edges of a book once read and now forgotten, usurped by high-speed data downloads that leave no visible trace for us to return to and eulogize over.

Josephine Dixon, Winter Ponds
chosen by Guy Moreton

Words - Guy Moreton

Josephine Dixon’s lite-touch approach in conceiving this book is a lesson in lyrical and poetic simplicity that transcends the melancholic darkness of inverted trees, reflected in each Malevichian black-square frame of the ponds’ surface, so adeptly observed by Dixon.

Opening this small book, I was immediately taken back to mid nineteenth century; not to photography, but the publication of Henry David Thoreau’sWalden Pond and amongst his dense reflections on the philosophy of solitude, economy and progress, Thoreau’s return to nature and descriptions of Walden, White’s, Flint and Goose Ponds as they change through season; allow the reader to inhabit a thought.

Dixon’s ‘Winter Ponds’ is, in a sense, a meditation on quietness and darkness. To quote Thomas A Clark, Darkness is not closed but open.

Public Vote

Finally, lets see the top 3 books voted for by the good people of Southampton….

1st – Faye Phillips, Twenty

2nd – Logan Riehl, Portraits

3rd – Joe Rose, The Gull Sees Farthest Who Flies Highest
